So let’s talk about Highest 2 Lowest because on paper this had me hyped — Spike Lee directing a Denzel Washington crime thriller with A$AP Rocky in the mix? That’s Training Day vibes waiting to happen. I walked in expecting fireworks, but what I got was… good, just not legendary.
Don’t get me wrong, there are moments that bang. Spike still knows how to paint a city with style, and the tension is there. Denzel carries himself like only Denzel can, but if you’re hoping for that Training Day intensity — nah, it never really gets there. And the Denzel x Rocky link-up? Cool, but it should’ve been iconic, and instead it just sits at “solid.”
Jeffrey Wright, though — sharp as always. Man doesn’t miss. Ice Spice making her film debut? Not bad, she didn’t look out of place. And A$AP? He’s got presence, I’ll give him that. But still, I kept waiting for that scene, that moment where it all clicks into classic territory — and it just never fully arrived.
And listen… I thought Denzel was tripping at the end for not signing my guy. Like, c’mon, you’re telling me after everything, after all that back and forth, you don’t ink that? I had to laugh. But hey, that’s me. #FreeYungFelon.
So yeah, Highest 2 Lowest is worth a watch. It’s got style, it’s got some strong scenes, but it doesn’t reach the heights it should’ve. With Spike, Denzel, and A$AP lined up, I expected more than just “good.”
