Opening Statement
It’s too early to say Marvel is “back,” but Thunderbolts is a step in the right direction. I walked in with low expectations, hoping for something that could surprise me the way Guardians of the Galaxy did back in the day. While it didn’t reach that level, it’s still one of the better Marvel films in recent years — even if some of the characters and story beats aren’t ones I naturally connect with.
Plot Snapshot
Marvel’s latest team-up brings together an unlikely band of antiheroes and morally grey characters, forced to work together in true “dirty job” fashion. There’s humor, action, and team bonding that grows over the runtime, even if the central mission and some of the individual arcs don’t feel as impactful as they could.

- Olga Kurylenko – Finally gets a better moment as Taskmaster… and yes, I’m happy they killed the fake Taskmaster.
Craft & Storytelling
The action is crisp, the humor lands more often than not, and the group dynamics are surprisingly solid for a team made of characters I didn’t care much about going in. That said, the film doesn’t escape Marvel’s habit of agenda pushing in a way that’s hard to ignore. Some arcs feel shoehorned rather than organic, but the chemistry between cast members makes it easier to enjoy.
Thematic Impact
At its best, Thunderbolts works because of the bonds between characters rather than the mission they’re on. It leans on the antihero dynamic in a way that’s fun without losing sight of action spectacle. It sets up future MCU installments with threads worth following, even if it’s not an all-time great.
Final Thoughts
I went in looking for a surprise and got a solid Marvel film with some memorable team chemistry, good action, and a few satisfying payoffs. It’s not Guardians of the Galaxy magic, but it’s good enough to keep me curious about where Marvel takes this crew next.
