Joe Ikhinmwin's professional basketball career started with the 2012/2013 season signing with the most prestigious BBL team in history, the Newcastle Eagles. His debut game was on the 26th October 2012 against the number one seeded team at the time, the Leicester Riders. A stand out performance was against the Durham Wildcats; he scored 21 points on 9-11 shooting, while grabbing three re-bounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block in 29 minutes. By the end of the season, he had received BBL runners-up honours for the BBL championship, playoffs and cup.
During the season at Newcastle, Joe had this to say:
"Having graduated from South Carolina State University last year I have enjoyed my time as an Eagle. I feel like it is a good achievement for me, this being my first year out of college and I have come into a really good situation at Newcastle Eagles."
"One of the things I am trying to do is to put forward the effort and make sure when I do come off the bench and into the rotation, something is immediately happening on the offensive and defensive end."
When referring to the BBL finals, he stated:
"I feel I have an important role. I can only be excited to perform in a situation like this."
"I'm amped up, I’m ready to go and I’m ready to help to bring the Cup home. This is why I wanted to be an Eagle, because they win."
"Since I’ve been here, we’ve been winning and it’s been a really good journey and learning experience. There is a huge difference from college to playing professionally, especially with such a high-profile team, has been a great thing for me to do."
